As an advocate, and someone who cares and does things in or for the community, I hear a lot of compliments. I think the best and most memorable compliment is “You are so strong, and for a young woman your age, you have an amazing mindset.” I hear this statement a lot, especially when I’m going through trials and tribulations that no one would have expected me to come out of, or handle a certain way. A lot of people expect me to respond to negative thoughts with negativity, that’s not how I operate. I always flip everything into a positive, and I think that’s why my best compliment will forever be my favorite compliment.
Being a Woman is all about the way you carry yourself. For some reason, the world expects women to look and dress a certain way, basically to sum it all, we are given stereotypes. The more we allow those stereotypes to bother us, the less motivation a woman may feel to be herself. Now I come from a time of respect, understanding, and listening to understand instead of listening to respond. I also come from the 90s with an old soul, meaning a lot of the things the younger generations are into, even in my generation, I’m ahead of, or simply not interested. I’m the person who will sit with your uncle and grab the history of where we came from in general, to understand where I am going, and that’s what keeps me so humble about myself. You can place me in a room of females and easily determine who I am just by looking at us all, and the way I greet you. The way I communicate is a lot different from what we shouldn’t be doing, and that’s called leading by example.
I tend to think outside the box, and look at everything from a wide perspective, and not just person A’s perspective. That’s what makes you understand how people move, and how to move about certain situations. Once you’ve been through something so many times, it’s easy to do it alone or depend on yourself, for yourself, by yourself. That’s what people hate to see the most, independence, yet when humbleness and inspiration come from someone younger than you as an adult, you tend to sit back and think just as many did with me. I am always told I have an “old soul,” but my best compliment is always anything that consists of positivity within “For a woman your age.”
