All my life, all I ever did was think of ways to make other people happy, not myself, but others. I did that simply because I got joy from having a good heart, and at a time, I truly believed I was just placed on this earth to “help” others forever, individually, or until no longer needed. That’s because I wasn’t focused on myself, I was seeking happiness, and love through others, and I eventually learned the hard way. One thing I wish I started doing earlier, was meeting new people, and experiencing different views. Although I am only thirty years old, within the African-American community, not many people make it to or past that age.
I say this to say, I could’ve been focusing on myself, and my happiness, and finding my lane. Would I change anything just to reverse everything I’ve accomplished to this day? No, because I’ve made some great accomplishments, had great friends, and memories, and had the opportunity to live without having a disability. Now you may wonder, “Do you really enjoy being disabled?”. It’s not that I enjoy it, it showed me a lot of different things that I didn’t know I was capable enough to be bestowed upon my path, BUT GOD!
Having a disability didn’t just give me some things to prove, or show and tell, but in a weird sense, it gave me hope. Let me explain it in depth. We all know I have epilepsy. For those who don’t know, it is a seizure disorder. I happen to have a few different forms of seizures, all of which gave me hope. Each time I seized, I came back to my senses, and that’s something a lot of people don’t get to do. Ya’ll remember when I had twenty-seven seizures back to back and scared the doctor when I opened my eyes? He said I wasn’t supposed to make it, BUT GOD.
Needless to say, with that going on, my memory is supposed to be a little challenged. Also, the medication I take gets me very drowsy. But I graduated with two degrees, taught different aged children in at least three schools, and am raising beautiful children. I didn’t start earlier, but I accomplished it!
