I can’t recall what I was being seen for, It could have been a ruptured Ovarian Cyst, however I was in the hospital and waiting for my results. Now too often we don’t realize how hard some people work, and how hard some don’t. That day, there were many nurses walking around doing nothing but talking and gossiping, and there was a hand few tending to patients. While waiting for my results, I asked for help with my IV because it needed to be cleared, as it was leaking blood. A nurse noticed my need and came to help, yet in the process of that, she ended up falling near my IV. It wasn’t the IV that caused the fall, but the floors which had a spill unnoticed and had not been mopped. With my IV in, I jumped up to grabbed her and screamed for help.
In the process of that, I noticed that as I screamed for help, people were looking at me clueless as to what to do or what happened although I had yelled it. It was later brought to my attention that I should have shouted “Nurse down,” yet even so someone should have at least walked over and analyzed what was going on. No one did, until I lifted her up, and to top it off, she was an elderly woman so I felt very bad, and comforted her as she said her knee was hurting bad. A few weeks later, I had to return with the same issue, and she tended to my every need and kept thanking me for all that I did even though I was in pain myself. Although it was my act of kindness that helped, she reciprocated that same energy by remembering who I was and taking her time to stop doing her work, and find me to tend to me. That was one of the best thank-you’s that I could ever ask for, and a random act of kindness that stuck out to me.
It meant a lot to me because not all people are like that. Some are like “Yeah that’s the girl who helped me,” and continue about their day, but she chose to also maintain a relationship with me. It’s the little things that matter.
